The Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenotes Route) in Quintana Roo. One of the most popular attractions among locals and travelers. In addition to the paradisiacal beaches, is swimming in the crystal clear waters of a cenote. These bodies of water are one of the most beautiful and magical places you can be. Located on the highway that connects Puerto Morelos with the small town of Leona Vicario, the well-known Ruta de Los Cenotes houses several natural and adventure parks; as well as more than 60 cenotes, where in addition to snorkeling, diving and kayaking, you can do fun activities such as zip lines, ATV or all-terrain bike tours, bungee jumping and horseback riding.

In this article we will tell you the necessary information to travel La Ruta de Los Cenotes, however it is best to take a couple of days to visit 4 or 5 cenotes, and spend at least one night nearby. This way you will also have time to get to know Puerto Morelos at night or take a snorkel tour in the reef in the morning. Let’s get started!

How to get the Ruta de los Cenotes?

As we mentioned before, La Ruta de Los Cenotes is located very close to Puerto Morelos, just 25 minutes by car from Cancun or from Playa del Carmen.

If you are traveling from Cancun, you can take federal highway 307 toward Playa del Carmen. Passing Puerto Morelos, there will be the deviation to Leona Vicario. This is the road known as La Ruta de los Cenotes. It can also be reached by taking the Cancun – Valladolid Federal Highway 180 for 42 km. Once you get to Leona Vicario, you will see the deviation to the Ruta de los Cenotes on the left. If you are traveling from Playa del Carmen, take federal highway 307 towards Cancun and take the turnoff for the Puerto Morelos – Leona Vicario highway.

Tip: The easiest way to travel the Ruta de los Cenotes would be to rent a car since doing it by public transport is not easy.

Cenote Las Mojarras

This cenote is the largest in the area and is located at km 12.2 of the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cancun-Tulum Highway) and its name is due to the mojarras that inhabit it.

With a diameter of 67 meters and a depth of 14 meters, this open cenote has fresh, fresh water throughout the year, although it is not as clear as other cenotes.

Cenote Boca del Puma

This cenote is located within a nature reserve that is practically magical, located at km 16 of La Ruta de Los Cenotes.

It is a natural park of 100 hectares and protects 250 hectares of virgin forest. It has open and underground cenotes, where you can see impressive formations of stalactites, stalagmites and fossils.

Cenote Siete Bocas

This cenote is one of those that has formations full of rock, known as stalactites and stalagmites. This place is known for its natural gum fields in the jungle.

It is located at km 15.5 of the Puerto Morelos highway. This is one of the most beautiful in the Ruta de los Cenotes, since as its name indicates, it has seven mouths to see the different entrances of the cenote. Between each mouth, you have to travel a certain distance, some of up to 8 km that you can travel by bicycle.

It has basic and very rustic services. It offers a space to prepare roasted meats.

Cenote Verde Lucero

This place full of adventure is located approximately 18.5 kilometers from Puerto Morelos. It is an open-air cenote, which allows you to appreciate its beauty and the variety of colors that the water acquires depending on the time of day.

The cenote looks like a crystal clear pool and the maximum depth is 20 meters and the average is 10 meters. Other activities that can be done here are snorkeling, zip lines and bird watching.

It also has two natural platforms for diving, one 3 meters high and the other approximately 7 meters. The general areas are rustic and include restrooms, chairs, and palapas.

Cenote La Noria

This cenote belongs to a group called ‘Three Kings’, they are located next to the ‘La Bendición de Dios‘ ranch.

It is one of the largest cenotes on the Ruta de los Cenotes since it is 18 meters deep and 47 meters wide and is located at km 20 of the route, on the left in the direction of Leona Vicario. Follow the directions to Kin Ha cenote until you see a turnoff indicating La Noria. From here you travel a dirt road for 1.5 km.

A circuit of zip lines and ATVs through the jungle is offered, and they have a camping area. This site is also known by locals as an excellent option for cycling.

Cenote Kin Ha

This unique cenote belongs to a system of underground rivers, the water in this cenote is freshwater and they are one of the most refreshing in addition to being considered sacred. It is located at km 20 of the Puerto Morelos – Leona Vicario highway.

The Kin Ha cenote has a diameter of 40 meters and a depth of 50, making it perfect for diving, free diving and cave diving. The sun’s rays filtering into this body of water create a beautiful light show. Deeper down, impressive large stalactites can be seen.

Other activities that can be done here are: kayaking, zip lines, temazcal, snorkeling and diving.

Cenote Reserva Toh

This sinkhole It’s located at km 19 of La Ruta de Los Cenotes. The Reserva Too is nestled in the Mayan jungle, which makes it a beautiful place. And more than a cenote, it is a biological reserve of 500 hectares that we consider you should visit if you love nature experiences.
