Bacalar is a highly delicate and protected ecosystem. Only 100% biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent are allowed. To preserve the water quality and protect the ancient stromatolites, some restricted areas of the lagoon completely prohibit the use of conventional sunscreens.
We highly recommend wearing your swimsuit and packing a towel, a change of dry clothes for the return trip, comfortable water-friendly footwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, and enough cash for the local eco-tax, extra drinks, and tips.
