El Tren Maya stands as South Mexico’s most significant railway transportation endeavor, aimed to promote tourism in the southeastern region of the country. The monumental initiation of this grand project took place on December 16, 2018, with the placement of the first sleeper in Palenque. However, it wasn’t until June 2020 that construction of the train commenced. Finally, on December 15, 2023, a partial inauguration of the project took place.
The Tren Maya Route
This new railway transportation service will link archaeological sites, natural areas, and magical towns of the Península de Yucatán. This offer the opportunity to visit many cities and Ruinas mayas like Chichen Itza y Tulum.
Types of Trains
The train, called Xiinbal, meaning “to walk” in Mayan, features panoramic windows, security cameras, and a special cafeteria car. Seats are available in two classes: Tourist and Premier.
Janal. This train boasts an onboard restaurant with panoramic views, and its seating configuration for two or four optimizes space.
P’tal. Designed for long journeys, this train offers spaces for work or relaxation. The carriages feature cabins, allowing travelers to convert their seats into beds for rest during the journey.
Where to Purchase Tren Maya Tickets?
The primary purchasing channel is online through the website www.trenmaya.gob.mx. Here, you can select your route, schedule, and available dates for your journey, and also reserve your seat. Payment is made online. Another option is to physically purchase your ticket at the train station’s ticket counters. Fares will depend on the journey’s length, whether it’s long or intermediate, and the chosen service class: Tourist or Premier.
As the Mayan Train has been partially inaugurated, prices and routes are subject to change.
El Tren Maya Stations spans over 1,500 kilometers of railway tracks, connecting the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. It will feature seven sections divided into stops and stations.
